How to Play Calculation Solitaire

Calculation Solitaire requires you to build each foundation pile in different increments.

How to Play

Objective

The goal is to move all cards into the foundation. You place each card in the tableau in a special order until you reach a King.

The Setup and Play Area

Foundation piles: This is the area at the top of the game with an Ace, a 2, a 3, and a 4.

  • In the Ace pile, you can place any card in ascending order that is one rank higher. For example, the next card will be a 2.
  • In the foundation pile that starts with a two, you can place any card that is 2 ranks higher. For example, that next card will be a 4.
  • In the foundation pile that starts with a 3, you can place any card that is 3 ranks higher. For example, the next card will be a 6.
  • Finally, in the foundation pile that starts with a 4, you can place any card that is 4 ranks higher. Here, the next card will be an 8.
  • You do this until a King is placed in each foundation pile.

Tableau piles: These are the 4 empty cells or columns at the bottom of the game.

Stock pile: The remaining cards, or a total of 48 cards, go to the stock pile. You can only go through the stock pile once, and cards are dealt one at a time.

Calculation Solitaire setup

Available moves

  • Cards from the stock pile can be dealt to the foundation or the tableau. If dealt to the tableau, they can be placed in any cell or on top of any tableau card.
  • Individual cards or groups of cards cannot be moved within the tableau.
  • Only the bottom cards of the tableau, with no cards placed on top of them, can be moved to the foundation.
  • You win when all the foundation piles have a King.

Strategy

  • Strategically place cards in the tableau. For example, you may not want to place a card on top of a 3 at the beginning of the game because that card can go into the foundation that starts with an Ace after a 2 is placed there.
  • Immediately move playable cards to the foundation.
  • If you get stuck, use the undo button. You may not always make the right moves, and you may need to reverse some to win the game.
