What is Thieves of Egypt Solitaire?
Thieves of Egypt is a Solitaire game that uses two decks, or 104 cards, and if most similar to Forty Thieves. Similar to Klondike, you sequence cards by suit in descending order to place them in the foundation.
How to Play
Objective
The goal is to move all cards from the stock pile and tableau into 8 foundation piles by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.
The Setup and Play Area
There are three main areas in the game:
Tableau piles: This is the area where there are 10 columns of face-up cards shaped like a triangle. The first column has 1 card, the second has 3 cards, the third has 5 cards, the fourth has 7 cards, the fifth has 9 cards, the sixth has 10 cards, the seventh has 8 cards, the eighth has 6 cards, the ninth has 4 cards, and the 10th has 2 cards. In total, there are 55 cards.
Stock pile: The remaining cards, or a total of 49 cards, are face-down in the stock pile. You can only go through the stock pile once.
Waste pile: Cards drawn from the stock pile that cannot be placed in the tableau go to the waste pile.
Foundation piles: These are the eight piles at the top of the game, where cards are placed by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.
Available moves
- Only Aces can start in the foundation, and subsequent cards must be in ascending order by suit. For example, only a 2 of Hearts can be played on an Ace of Hearts.
- A card may be moved and sequenced on top of another card at the bottom of the tableau if it’s of the opposite color and one rank lower.
- A group of sequenced cards can be moved on top of a bottom tableau card if the top card of that group is of the opposite color and one rank lower.
- New cards of dealt from the stock pile into the waste pile.
- The top card of the waste pile is playable and can be moved to the foundation or the tableau.
- A King can be placed in an empty column.
- You are allowed a single pass through the stock pile.
- You win when all cards are placed in the 8 foundations by suit in ascending order.
Strategy
To win a, follow these tips:
- Create empty columns to move Kings there and unblock others.
- Immediately move Aces to the foundation.
- The first visible sequence may not always be the best one. Plan out your moves to remove as many cards as possible from the tableau.
- Because foundations are built from Ace to King, try to make low cards available so you can move them out of the tableau into the foundation.
- Avoid sequencing higher ranked-cards on lower ones unless you know the higher-ranked cards can be moved later.
